Description
DescriptionLord Chelmsford served as Governor of Queensland from 1905 to 1909. This framed illuminated address reads: On behalf of the Citizens of the City of Ipswich the Council of the Municipality thereof desire to tender you and Lady Chelmsford a hearty and cordial welcome on this your first official visit to the City, and to express our deep sense of gratitude that you have, after your recent severe illness been restored to health and strength, which we trust will be yours to enjoy for the remainder of your term of office. At the same time we beg to assure your Excellency of the loyalty of our citizens to the throne and person of His Most Gracious Majesty King Edward the Seventh. Having had the pleasure of your own and Lady Chelmsford's company in Ipswich for a short while soon after you landed on these shores, and also the opportunity of listening to the words of counsel that then fell from your lips, we can assure that by the cordiality of your manner you endeared all hearts to you, and our welcome to-day is therefore all the more ardent. We are pleased to notice that for this reason the same kindliness of welcome is accorded to you by the people of Queensland wherever you go. You will have the opportunity to-day of seeing the agricultural, pastoral, mining, and industrial products of this part of the great State you have been called upon to govern, and we trust that the exposition will meet with your Excellency's approval and commendation, and that it will, after having witnessed other similar displays, be deemed by you to be a further proof of the great resources and productions of this part of His Majesty's dominion. We have the honor to be, Sir, Your Obedient Servants. Signed on behalf of the Council, F Golbey Mayor. Albion Hayne Town Clerk. Ipswich 21st June, 1906.
