DescriptionBiographical summary of Arthur Bennett. Arthur, started his working life at Cribb and Foote in 1908. He then became a fitter with the railways and finished his apprenticeship in 1915. As he served in the Citizens' Forces, Arthur embarked for overseas in October 1916, on the HMAT Boonah, as a Regimental Sergeant Major in the 4th Pioneer Battalion. The Battalion was involved with the construction, maintenance and repair of military railways on the Western front. He was gassed, and wounded in Ypres, in 1917, and spent time in hospitals in the United Kingdom. He returned to Australia in July 1918. After the war he returned to working for Queensland Railways, finishing his working life as Foreman of the Westinghouse Brake Shop at the Railway Workshops, North Ipswich, in 1961.
