Description
DescriptionText of 13 minute interview with Rob Anderson on his experiences during the Ipswich flood. He relates his volunteer role, forming a task force to help with the clean-up and their first job cleaning up St Ives Shopping Centre and the surrounding roads – a very big job. After this they had to gather all the vehicles they could and were split up into different areas all over Ipswich, working with the Urban Fire Service. He talks about walking streets and knocking on people’s doors with one of the urban officers, to see if anyone needed a hand and then calling on a truck to come in He had about seven trucks with him at any one time. He was very appreciative of the units they had from all over, like the Gold Coast, up north and Northern New South Wales, about 100 vehicles. He also thanked the PCYC, the Mary Ellen Hotel and all the wonderful people who fed them and provided them with water and sunscreen along the way. He says all in all they spent 10 days cleaning homes, businesses and roads (hosing) and after being stood down some of them went back out and did some more. The floods occurred in January and peaked on Wednesday 12 January. More detailed information can be found in the local newspapers and media.
