Description
DescriptionThe address reads: ‘To Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. May it please your Majesty, We, the Mayor and Aldermen, on behalf of the citizens of Ipswich, welcome you to our City, and express to Your Majesty our sincere appreciation of your graciousness in affording our citizens an opportunity of meeting you, so that they may convey to you their continuing loyalty to the Throne and their affection for Her Majesty The Queen, you illustrious daughter. We wish that your stay in Queensland could have been longer to enable you to see more of the vast resources of our West Moreton District. You will be privileged, however, to view the Fassifern, an area most beautiful and fertile, which contributes in no small way to the wealth of Australia. Much has been achieved in our City during the past 130 years, and we hope to see even greater development in future years. Your Majesty’s interest in migration prompts me to say that we have been happy with the migrants who have already come to Queensland, and we are anxious to welcome many more, particularly people who are our kinsmen from the United Kingdom. May we assure Your Majesty, that those who make their home in our State will find many opportunities of achieving prosperity and happiness. Your presence here to-day, we feel sure, will strengthen our ties of friendship and loyalty to the Mother Country, and will increase our desire to fulfil faithfully the obligations which we have as an integral part of the British Commonwealth of Nations. We pray that you will enjoy your visit and that you will return home in safety, blessed with health and strength to enable you to carry out your high responsibilities. Given under the seal of the Corporation of the City of Ipswich.’ The address is signed by the Town Clerk: V N Smith [Victor Norman] and Mayor: James Finimore.
