Description
DescriptionThe first Congregational Church was founded on the 17th March 1853, with the first services held in a cottage in Nicholas Street. The congregation comprised of Baptists and Independents. On the 11th March 1855, the first Congregational Church building was opened in Brisbane Street, opposite Wharf Street. A new chapel was built on the site in 1871 and the first church became the Sunday School. The 1893 floods submerged the chapel and caused the Sunday School building to collapse completely. A new Sunday School was built, on higher ground, in East Street, costing £4000 when it opened in 1895. In 1953 the Brisbane Street church was destroyed by fire and plans were made to build a third church next to the Sunday School building in East Street. Designed by Scorer & Scorer Brisbane and built by local firm T.P. Turner, site preparations began in 1956. Taking two years to complete, the new Congregational Church was consecrated in 1958. In 1977 the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches in Australia combined to form the Uniting Church in Australia. In the years since it has been a church, the building has been used as a funeral parlour and art gallery. As of 2014 it was vacant. The Congregational Church Sunday School is the building beside the Church.
