[i][u]Melanie[/u]: What about the outhouses themselves: how come the out houses were so far away from the house?[/i]
[u]Jeff[/u]: Probably the smell, I's say.
[u]Peter[/u]: That'd be the only reason. I don't think there was ever a regulation that it had to be so far away but they were just, you just imagine a nice hot summer's day cooking away in a little box with tin roof.
[u]Jeff[/u]: Some had slanted roofs, some had round sort of top roofs.
[u]Peter[/u]: Where you accessed the pan from was sometimes through the front door and there was a little trap door in the front of the timber box.
Other ones you'd come around from the outside behind it and open the trap door and slide it out from the back and they were the ones where - I never had it happen to me, but Jeff would have - that someone's still sitting on the toilet when you're pulling the can out.
[u]Jeff[/u]: 'Just hold on I'll be finished in a minute'.
[i][u]Melanie[/u]: Do you have any stories of your own of experiences of using the outhouse? Like the creepy crawlies?[/i]
[u]Jeff[/u]: Oh no, creepy crawlies no. The only time, a couple of things I've had experience of, I walked into a woman once, she was sitting on the toilet. She gave a scream and everything and I'm 'sorry lady'.
