Ipswich Vulcanisers and Rubber Works was a tyre and tube repairer, originally in Bell Street. The company moved to new premises in Brisbane Street by April 1928 (site of Hog’s Breath Café, 2013).

The image shows three men at work, possibly re-treading tyres.

Vulcanize is a process where rubber is treated with sulphur or a sulphur compound under heat and pressure to improve its elasticity and strength. The process can also produce a hard substance, such as vulcanite.
